Janet Laura Rogge Momsen
January 12, 1932 – July 17, 2025
Janet Laura Rogge Momsen passed away peacefully on July 17, 2025, at the age of 93. She had been a longtime resident of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she lived at Eastcastle Place for the past 25 years.
Janet was the beloved mother of Susan Momsen, Lynn Wymelenberg, the late Karen Momsen-Evers, and Kenneth (Tammy) Momsen, Jr. She is preceded in death by her father Everett Rogge, mother Hilaria Rogge and brother Everett (Katherine) Rogge, Jr. Janet was a proud grandmother to ten grandchildren and a great-grandmother (Gigi) to 18 great-grandchildren.
A graduate of Washington High School in Milwaukee, Janet later settled in Menomonee Falls, where she raised her family. She was a member of Job’s Daughters in her youth and carried a deep sense of service and leadership throughout her life.
Though Janet never learned to swim herself, she made a profound and lasting impact on aquatics in Wisconsin. She was a founding member of the Menomonee Falls Swim Club and a passionate advocate for youth sports. She served for many years as the swimming delegate to the Wisconsin State Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), eventually becoming president of the entire state AAU. In that role, she represented Wisconsin as a delegate to the United States Olympic Committee.
In 1970, Janet was honored with the Wisconsin Swimming Distinguished Service Award. With the passage of Title IX, she played a key role in partnering with the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) to organize and run the very first Girls Swimming and Diving State Championship in 1971, held in Janesville, Wisconsin.
Later, she shared her love of the sport with her daughter, Susan, as they co-coached the Wauwatosa Sea Sprites Synchronized Swim Team. Under Janet’s guidance, the team earned multiple state titles, with many athletes achieving individual state championships and All-State honors.
Janet Momsen will be remembered for her strong will, community spirit, and the quiet but powerful way she made waves—both literally and figuratively—in the lives of so many.
