Peacefully passed to the Hands of God on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at the age of 89. High school sweetheart and loving husband of 68 years to Nancy Louise Brey Schumacher, who passed away on April 14, 2023.
Roger is survived by children Thomas (Bea), Juliann (Rick) Strahl, Kim (Roger) Kocken and Teri (Joel) Schwab, grandchildren Michael (Christine), Kendra (Eric), Melissa (Jody), Heather (Patrick), Andrew (Jackie), Eric (Alexandra), Madison, Annika and Elijah, along with great-grandchildren Rosalie, Jasper, Sienna, Scarlett, Hampton, Oliver, Harper, Ava, and Ezra.
Roger graduated from Washington High School in 1953, where he was City Champion in track and field. He was Salesperson of the Year for Eau Claire Book and Stationery, where his love of education and teachers was evident throughout his career.
Roger was an avid golfer, and played with lifelong friends Jerry Fisher and Bob Bathy. Roger and Nancy enjoyed traveling and took many trips to Europe, as well as a 9-month tour of the United States in a motor home with their beloved dog Louie. Roger and Nancy spent winters in Casa Grande, Arizona in a thriving retirement community where Roger won many ‘Senior Olympic’ medals in a variety of sports.
A collector of Dickens Victorian Village, Roger shared beautiful holiday scenes with his grandchildren, as well as volunteered to set up the villages during the holidays at the Ronald McDonald House. After family, his love of animals, particularly dogs, was perhaps Roger’s dearest passion. He volunteered at the Ozaukee County Humane Society and enjoyed walking the dogs there with his daughter Teri and granddaughter Annika Schwab. While residing at Lakewood Memory Care, Roger loved visits from the residents, visiting children’s groups, and therapy dogs, as well as playing cribbage with his family and his friend Mike.
