Passed away peacefully on February 19, 2021, at age 83. Loving husband of Martha “Marty” for 60 years. Devoted father of Kenneth (Jill) and Karl (Shawn). Proud grandfather of Catherine (Trent) Moody, Margeaux (Hunter) Oberbroeckling, Anna Anderson, Cole Anderson, Spencer Anderson, and Mitchell Anderson. Dear brother of Sue (Al) Martens. Also loved by cousins, nieces, nephews, godsons, other family and friends.

Dick was born in Superior, WI, and grew up in Wauwatosa and Eau Claire. At UW – Eau Claire, he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Botany. He achieved his Masters in Botany at Kansas University and went on to be a Professor of Botany at Chapman College in Orange, CA. He earned his Doctorate in Optometry at Los Angeles College of Optometry. Then, he moved to Abbotsford, WI, where he ran his own optometric practice for 30 years. While there, he was active in the community and served in the Lions Club, as a church elder, and was a member of the WI Optometric Association. He was one of the founders of the Abbotsford Christmas Parade, and was the organizer of the Abby Flatlander Race. After retirement, he moved to Waukesha and also spent time in Apache Junction, AZ. Dick’s lifelong hobbies included running, square dancing, ham radio, raising orchids, making rock clocks, and performing at a comedy club.

The family wishes to thank the caring and compassionate staff at Avalon Square and Heartland Hospice.

Marty i am so sorry to hear about dick . I have had so much bad news lately that I wonder if l will get more. My nephew died on COVID and then a good friend died in a house fire , I am still taking immunotherapy treatments but will find out if the therapy is working. Are you/going back to golden vista .my prayers are with you and your family from Adele

Dr. Anderson was my optometrist in the 70s and fitted me for my first contact lens’. He had a great sense of humor and was always interested in what you had to say. Abbotsford was lucky to have him. My heartfelt condolences to his family. Sharon (Holtz) Johnson

So sorry for your loss. I imagine it has been hard to watch your husband/father pass away slowly as my father also died with Alzheimer’s. My prayers are with you.

So sad today thinking of you and family. Dick was always so cheerful. Will miss his smile and jokes. Love to all.

Marty, Thanks so much for the note, which did get here in time, and our condolences to you and the family. Sharon just had her hip replaced, and I don't drive in the dark so well anymore, so we apologize for missing the gathering at 4:00. We will be watching the service at 6:00. We (Sharon and I) often think of the night of the "mixer" dance between semesters at the UW Eau Claire. Dick had come to urge me to leave the chess club (more like drag me out, actually) and check out the girls and music at the dance. We watched for a while and then saw two girls sitting together. We went over and asked them to dance and they said yes.. Later on Dick and Sharon and I went for pizza at Sammy's. That was Sharon's and my first date. Thanks so much, Dick.

This goes back to when Dick and I were in college. It was Greek week and he invited me to take a ride in his Jaguar. We rode around for a bit and then he invited me to wash it with him. We were at his home and I asked if I could borrow his phone so I could make a date for the evening. I was in the house talking on the phone and Sue walked in and said hi. I went back outside and asked him if his sister was going with anyone. He said no. The next day I called her up and asked her if she would like to get a cup of coffee. Sue and I were married. Thanks to Dick. He did a good job as a matchmaker.
