Dr. Mernathan M. Sykes, was born Mernathan Banks August 15, 1953 in Demopolis, Alabama to Nathan Banks Sr. and Lucy Ann Banks. Her family moved to Chicago, IL around 1958, Mernathan was 5 years old at the time. She graduated John Marshall Harlan High School in 1971 and entered college at Southern IL University (SIU). While in college at SIU, she met and married Leonard L. Sykes Jr. and they had two children: Dr. Leonard E. Sykes III and Aisha Sykes. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in education at Chicago State University, a Master’s degree in Education at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and also a Doctorate degree in education at Gwynedd Mercy University in Pennsylvania.
Mernathan had a great passion for learning and teaching. Both her and Leonard L. Sykes Jr. were well respected for their craft in their respective professions. Mernathan for her contributions in adult education and Leonard L. Sykes Jr. for his contributions as city editor for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The family moved to Glendale, WI in 1988. Upon arriving in Glendale, Mernathan taught at Parkway Elementary School and later in adult education for Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC). She was a constant worker for others, and consistently exhibited great traits of compassion for others, community and family leadership, and strong integrity. Mernathan was a person that stood firm in her values.
Mernathan is survived by her children, Dr. Leonard E. Sykes III and Aisha Sykes. A grandson Jamison McMurray-Sykes. Mernathan has 7 siblings: Jonn Robert Foster (deceased) Sam Foster (married to Geraldine), Lucy Ann Banks, Nathan Banks Jr., Abner L. Banks (deceased), Cato Banks (married to Mary), and Edna Rachal (married to Lionel). There are also many other loved ones, including Shaletha Smith, Savannah Multrie, Shellisa McMurray-Multrie, Sharon McMurray, and many other Aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
