Douglas “Doug” Bass Harris, 69, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2025, at 6:00 AM at the Zablocki VA Medical Center, following a long and courageous battle with ALS.
Doug was born on August 14, 1955, in Ridgeland, Mississippi. A proud veteran, he began his career in the U.S. Air Force as a maintenance technician and continued in that field throughout his life. He was known not only for his skills and work ethic, but for his calm strength, kindness, and deep commitment to his family.
Doug had a passion for life’s simple and meaningful pleasures—he loved working in the garden, tinkering with cars, watching movies, listening to music, and visiting museums. He was also an avid competitor, participating in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games where he excelled in bowling and boccia.
He was a proud member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the ALS Association, where he found both community and purpose during his later years.
Doug is survived by his children: Saraya Harris, Douglas D. Harris, and Jawana Washington; and stepchildren: Tamara Umphryes and Brandon Loonsfoot. He leaves behind a cherished legacy through his 10 Grand Kids and 8 Great Grand Kids.
To his family, Doug was the rock—the steady, guiding force who held everyone together with quiet love and unwavering support. His memory and spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. “He will be missed dearly, and I will ensure his legacy lives through me every day.”
A private memorial service will be held with close family.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the ALS Association or the Paralyzed Veterans of America http://www.pva.org/ in Doug’s honor.
