Dorothy J. Brode

Dorothy Brode died on August 16, 2023. She was 89 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Brode, who died in 1986.

Dorothy was born on August 12, 1934, to Martin and Matilda Mihelic. She grew up in Cicero, Illinois and graduated from J. Sterling Morton High School in 1952. During her senior year in high school, she started working in the purchasing department for Western Electric. The company manufactured telephone equipment and consumer products such as refrigerators. It was here that she met the love of her life, Jack Brode. They were married in 1954.

Dorothy was a stay-at-home mom and raised three children: Barry, Kevin and Gail. After Jack died, she went to work in retail and then found her calling at the Hebron House of Hospitality. She worked to provide shelter and support for people in transition. She specialized in finances, working to provide financial support for people in need.

Dorothy was active in many social groups in her neighborhood. Her favorite was “The Birthday Club.” Once a month, a close group of women would eat at restaurant to celebrate those who had birthdays during the month. Dorothy kept journals of these gatherings. She had four complete journals that documented their experience and evaluated the food and service. Each person would provide a rating. The group dates to 1991 and is still going strong.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Barry Brode of Grand Forks, ND; Kevin (Kristen) Brode of Mukwonago, WI; Gail (Greg) Warner of Malaga, Spain; grandchildren: Caiden, Colten, and Keegan; and sister Caroline Kristufek of Naperville, IL.

Dorothy’s family expresses heartfelt thanks to the following: Waukesha Memorial Hospital Staff (second floor staff) and AngelsGrace Hospice, located in Oconomowoc, WI. These caregivers provided comfort and support to Dorothy’s during her final days.

Visitation gathering at the Funeral Home, Saturday, September 23, 10:30-11:30 AM. Celebration of Life Funeral service 11:30 AM, followed by a luncheon. Private burial Wisconsin Memorial.
