Gore (Thurston), Dorothy Betty –
Our dear Mother passed peacefully on Friday, April 11, 2025, at 96 years old. She was a wonderful mother who was always there when needed. Her support, wisdom and love were shared with her family and others in abundance. She was hard working and used her abilities to make a difference for others. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, professionalism, and strength.
She was predeceased by Dorothy Thurston (Allen), mother, Richard Thurston, father and Wm. I. Gore, husband. She also had three brothers: Richard (Ingrid), Lawrence, and Bertram (Adelaide). Dorothy leaves behind her loving children Cecelia Gore (Randy Bryant), Celeste Gore, and her precious granddaughter Emmanuelle Haye. She was blessed to have many relatives and friends that she cherished.
Dorothy was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. She had fond memories of her experiences and family. Serving in the United States Army, she was honorably discharged in 1956. She often inquired about everyone’s well-being and cared about their lives. Early in her life she was actively involved with Jack and Jill and served as a Girl Scout Troop Leader. She was involved with an arts group that she treasured, giving her an outlet to enjoy her creative side. She was dedicated to learning and earned two master’s Degrees, one in Social Work and an MBA. Her dedication to children and their families was demonstrated throughout her career, which concluded as director of Social Work for Milwaukee Public Schools. After retirement she earned a real estate license.
Her final residence was at East Castle Place in Milwaukee, WI. She was one of the first residents to move into the newly built addition to the historic facility. She made countless friends and took immense pride in developing a directory of the residents that lived in the complex. Her goal was to get to know everyone and make sure that they were all connected to assure quality engagement amongst each other. Near the end of her life, Dorothy, known to many as Betty, had the extraordinary pleasure of having high quality caregivers. Her quality of life was tremendously enhanced by their loving approach to caregiving. We are thankful for them and Eastcastle’s staff.
Dorothy Betty Gore was independent, strong, and courageous. She motivated us and shaped our values. She crafted a satisfying life for herself and our family. We admire her for countless reasons but appreciate her most for the love and encouragement she provided every step of the way.
The family will hold a private celebration of her life on Monday, April 21, 2025, and a committal service at Wisconsin Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the House of Peace – Milwaukee, WI in her honor.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46).
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge (Psalm 46:11).
So, with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy (John 16:22).
