Dan was a wonderful mentor during my 25 years working with him at the Downtown Health Center. He always put his patients first, A very caring and kind physician with a great dry sense of humor. Thanks Judy for all the wonderful parties at the Torphy home. Margaret Layde

I am saddened to hear about Dan’s death. I have fond memories of the Torphy family centered around Hartland Schools. I often wondered if you still had the home in Muscoda, down from my Uncle Frank Shadewald’s place. Sending my prayers for God’s peace upon you all for your journey of grief.

Dr Dan Torphy was a Colonel active in NASA with an impactful career, like Colonels Buzz Aldrin (2nd person to step on the moon) and John Glenn (US Senator). Although he lived from North Carolina to Washington and Arizona, we were enriched by his life in Wisconsin. Dan was a dedicated physician volunteering to care for patients on Saturday mornings. He was an outstanding educator of pediatric residents and medical students influencing a generation to provide compassionate services for vulnerable children and their families. Before Children’s had an electronic health record, Dan learned a programming language developed at Mass General Hospital (MUMPS) to design the Downtown Health Center EHR. I used his data base to inform asthma research studies 20 years ago. Dan’s humor, warmth, kindness and multiple talents will be dearly missed.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

I'm sorry to hear of Dan's passing. We were good friends for the more than 25 years we worked together at Children's and the Medical College. We met in the 70's when I came to Milwaukee to join the Infectious Disease Section at Children's and MCW and Dan arrived to work in the Ambulatory/Emergency Medicine Department. Most people don't realize Dan was formally trained in Infectious Disease. In 1970 he published what may have been the first description of an important, sometimes fatal, unrecognized infection in toddlers and infants, "occult pneumococcal bacteremia." This led to the later recognition of the importance of evaluating highly febrile young kids in the ambulatory setting and standardizing their assessment and antibiotic treatment worldwide. Dan considered joining the ID section in the early days of the our group, but he enjoyed emergency medicine and general pediatrics more. In the late 80's Dan revamped CHW's Downtown Health Center and showed that it was indeed possible to make it and other such entities financially neutral while providing excellent medical care and outstanding student and resident education concurrently. His experience and the techniques employed at the DHC were published later in the medical literature and became a model for other academic centers with academic general pediatric teaching clinics. Dan was one of those selfless, effective, highly skilled people working hard in the background who helped CHW transition from its position as a local institution to a regional/national enterprise. He was great physician and good friend and will be sorely missed. Joe Chusid MD MCW Professor of Pediatrics (Emeritus) Former Chief of Pediatric Infectious Disease, Retired

I am so sorry for all of us and particularly his family for our loss. He was a kind and gentle person. He meant a lot to me. When I interviewed for a job in his clinic, just meeting him for an hour was all it took for me to know I wanted to work with him. One of the best decisions I ever made. Dan turned out to be the best role model I ever had.
