Amul “Pops” Harris Jr, age 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 17th, at Luther Manor Nursing Home.
He was born to humble beginnings on July 31, 1930 in Etta, Mississippi to Amul and Estelle (Visor) Harris. He had a love for cars and planes that started at a young age that had an impact on his path in life. In his late teens, he enlisted in the Army to serve his country. Amul proudly served in the Korean War and would often share that he could still recite his ‘general orders’ well into his later years. After his military service, Amul settled in Racine, Wisconsin, where he started a family and enjoyed a career of 36-years at American Motors, retiring in 1986.
Although he never flew again after the war, Amul continued to have a fascination with aviation, frequently taking his family to Mitchell Field to watch the planes. He enjoyed listening to Elvis Presley, working on his cars, and going on road trips. He appreciated nice clothes and his eyes would light up when he found a new hat to add to his collection.
In his later years, Amul cherished his time at home, spending hours watching antique shows and staying up-to-date on current events. During his short stay at the nursing home he became known as the popcorn man, sitting in his recliner munching on his snacks and watching the news.
Amul was preceded in death by his sister, Besse Andrews, and his son, Daniel Harris. He is survived by his sister, Perlie Mae (Fate) Rodgers, and his children: Glentoria Johnson, Teverlyn (William) Allen, Deverlyn Harris, Amul Harris III, Gabriel Harris, Casimir (Sandy) Harris, Crescenda (Alan) Broom, and Vena Gawro. He is also remembered by his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Krause Funeral Home, 9000 West Capitol Drive, Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM. Service at 11:30 AM on Monday, October 7, 2024. Followed by burial at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
